Bulgarian’s bTV goes file-based with mxfSPEEDRAIL Centralized Ingest System |
MOG Technologies, the leading provider of centralized ingest solutions has deployed its system at the major Bulgarian’s private broadcaster- bTV. The challenge consisted in the migration of bTV’s archive and news production processes into a completely tapeless and flexible system. In order to accomplish this challenge, bTV has installed 15 mxfSPEEDRAIL units for SDI recording, file-based ingest and publishing of media directly from its editing islands. bTV is the Bulgarian television channel with the largest audience broadcasting in open signal to Bulgaria and via satellite to other European regions.
bTV is the first network channel to integrate the complete mxfSPEEDRAIL system, in order to have an overall control of every step of the production workflow. By acquiring the mxfSPEEDRAIL product family, bTV was able to accelerate its production processes allowing a smooth transition to HD production with the new mxfSPEEDRAIL file-based capabilities.
MOG’s HD/SDI recorder mxfSPEEDRAIL S1000, has offered bTV the ability to digitize its tape archive into AVC-Intra high quality video codec, thus allowing editing the media immediately while digitizing. In order to simplify an accurate identification of the material, mxfSPEEDRAIL S1000 also has a practical and powerful annotation engine that allows metadata addition to the digitized clips, in order to easily keep track of the assets.

Working in parallel with S1000, MOG’s powerful file-based ingest system - mxfSPEEDRAIL F1000 - provides a centralized approach to automatically ingest any type of media files. After the ingest process is completed, the files are normalized into AVID OPAtom format which enables the content distribution for editing and archive systems. The ingested media is immediately available at the new Avid ISIS 5000, allowing a collaborative editing among Avid editors. bTV editors can start editing while the video server is still recording with the possibility to pre-select, trim or merge the ingested material. The system is also able to check-in directly into Avid Interplay Media Asset Management. Upon editing in Avid suite, the EDL sequences are directly stitched and published by mxfSPEEDRAIL O1000. Working in the background to free the editor, mxfSPEEDRAIL O1000 publishes the media directly to playout video server as MXF OP1A and to bTV’s website as MPEG-4/H.264 files. |

“bTV was looking for a turn-key solution able to cover all the main production workflow processes. With mxfSPEEDRAIL centralized solutions we were able to upgrade our facilities to a faster, flexible and reliable HD workflow system. MOG’s system covered all of our major needs: recording SDI feeds, ingesting all major formats and publishing the media files directly to our website. Besides covering all our technical requirements, mxfSPEEDRAIL also presented itself as the most cost-effective solution.” Said Peter Dimitrov, bTV Technical Director.
With mxfSPEEDRAIL integration bTV has also gained the ability to control remotely from the video editor stations, without the need to use any extra automation equipment. Regardless of the model, users have full control over the recording and ingest process either via an Internet browser or a Media Asset Management System (through web-service interfaces).
“We are delighted that bTV has selected the whole mxfSPEEDRAIL product family to guarantee a high quality and seamless workflow integration with Avid, both in the news environment and archive areas” said Vitor Teixeira, MOG Technologies Marketing & Sales Director.
Bulcomp, MOG Technologies’ partner, has been the responsible company for the deployment of mxfSPEEDRAIL system and has assisted bTV in the whole process of planning, integrating and configuring mxfSPEEDRAIL system. The installation was made with other brands and systems which strengthens mxfSPEEDRAIL’s full interoperability.
bTV’s new HD production and archive facilities are based in Sofia including a new set of HD studios and HD playout operations. The facility is playing out 9 capture channels in both HD and SD, and is ready to prepare several TV programs simultaneously in several editing rooms. mxfSPEEDRAIL’s integration is fully operational and is covering the production of several programs on open signal.
Taking full advantage of its new file-based system, bTV is also using mxfSPEEDRAIL S1000 to digitize its DV25 tapes into non-linear content, thus migrating into a completely tapeless system.
