Telewizja Polsat sp. z o.o. is the biggest terrestrial commercial broadcaster in Poland, established in 1992. It belongs to Grupa Cyfrowy Polsat S.A ., which also owns other 26 channels. The Grupa Cyfrowy Polsat S.A, one of the main providers of digital multichannel television in Poland. It is the 4th largest digital platform in Europe and the largest in Central and Eastern Europe. The service is distributed over the Hotbird satellite and includes a mix of free to air and encrypted channels for 4,5 millions of subscribers.

The Challenge

On a day-to-day scenario Polsat needs to face the same challenge that all broadcasters do: generate numerous and different types of files without losing its quality; save time by editing the files while they are being ingested; publish content as fast as possible by minimizing the time from capture to distribution; obtain the ability to balance the ingest workload; and correct non-conform media content. In other words, Telewizja Polsat sp. z o.o needed to simplify its production workflow by reducing costs and saving time on both ingest and delivery processes. With mxfSPEEDRAIL the channel was able to minimize the workload on the operator side, ensuring the automation of the whole workflow.

The Solution

Generating multiple resolutions with Interplay Check-In

IT/TV department of Polsat installed 3 MOG’s file-based ingest systems – mxfSPEEDRAIL F1000 – including interplay check-in and supporting the generation of simultaneous high-resolution and low-resolution formats. The “edit-while-ingest” allows the editors to start the work before ingest is complete, regardless of the video format and workflow, directly into Avid environment. The systems are able to balance the workload with load balancing capability. Besides distributing the workload across multiple ingest systems, the mxfSPEEDRAIL is also able to detect network failures and automatically redistribute the ingest traffic to the remaining platforms. Additionally, it creates a redundancy mechanism assuring that if one of the ingest systems fails, there will be no impact on the overall system. This enhances the system scalability, efficiency, and availability of mission-critical environments. The load balancing ensures that Polsat achieves an optimal resource utilization, minimizing response time and avoiding their systems overload. MOG’s file-based ingest is automatically correcting any non-conform media, by a new add-on feature that enables Quality Check of media contents during the ingest process, by analyzing the video, the wrapper and the audio files. mxfSPEEDRAIL F1000 standardized parameters of MXF files in XDCam HD codec. Since the ingest process is critical for the success of any production, MOG enables Telewizji Polsat sp. z o.o to reduces errors, costs by moving media between sources and servers as when working with SXS cards, with faster than real time speeds between 8 to 10 times and multiple simultaneous transfers.
